Land below the wind

I believe the pictures will tell the story. Feel free to drop by at this website : Sabah Pictures

This was the first vacation with my parents after 6 years, which the last one was to Melbourne, Australia. My parents are the adventurous type who love to explore new cultures and appreciate nature and it's beauty. However, limitation lies in their age. I'm pretty much tired of telling my friends that "I went to Kota Kinabalu but no, I did not visit the islands, nor climb the mountain, nor did I went for the white water rafting. But I enjoyed the trip."

Eventhough Sabah is part of Malaysia, however, they have a different lifestyle than the peninsular. Life there is laid back (and SLOW!!!). Time is not really an essence to them so try not to arrange back to back activities. People there love to have tea breaks (not in mamaks) but in coffeeshops which sells bread and teh tarik.

Some highlights of the trip:

1. Seafood in KK is nothing to shout about but Sandakan is superbly fresh and cheap.

2. Crossing the road is really easy.

3. Don't be conned, not all seafood is fresh.

4. Food is expensive.

5. Their rain are rainstorms, the wind can blow an umbrella away.

6. There are lots of Catholic churches there and each has a signboard to it.

7. Cab fare is really expensive, i.e. a 5 km ride is RM20 to and fro.

8. Locals there have tea breaks in coffeehouses that sells bread, not mamak.

I find that there are more to see in Sandakan than KK. KK is just a town (not sure why they call it a city) but Sandakan has attractions even in town itself. It has a heritage trail which you can explore within the town itself.

These are indigenious in Sabah or Borneo:

Sabah Shu Jai Choi

Orang Utan

Probocsis Monkey

Rafflesia

O yeah...is really nothing much in KK, if you don't go up to the mountain or go down to the island. On top of that..having so many "foreigner" hanging around the "city center" sight looking (you know what I mean). Specially serious during weekend.

Anyway...the food there...other then seafood...is overall good. I still miss the "chu yuk fun" I had there...was expensive, but fabulous! ^_~
